I thought your members might like to know about an encounter I had with a large shark off Shorncliffe today. I frequently paddle around the Shorncliffe area and have chatted with a few of the club paddlers from time to time. Today I paddled about 10k east off Shorncliffe and was having a rest before heading back in when I was struck forcibly from underneath my kayak. The blow lifted the rear of my kayak and knocked me into the water. I knew instantly only one thing could do that.
I quickly clambered onto the upturned hull fearing another strike. Despite my precarious situation, lying starfish on an upturned and very unstable kayak, in my terror I wasn't game to slide back into the water to right the kayak and pump the water out. So I decided to wait it out for a while hoping that shark would have moved on before I jump back into the water.
Fortunately I managed to flag down a passing yacht 30 minutes later. I jumped onboard and the crew helped helped me flip the kayak back from from the yacht. I then paddled the 10k back to Shorncliffe and found some impressive teeth marks on the bottom of my kayak.
Take care everyone...there are some very curious fish out there. Julian
