Glory or Bust: the 365 Day Challenge

When past president Mike Parsons challenged long-term member and legendary paddler Ray Dahl to a race to the Gateway Arterial Bridge and back in 2008 he did not win… apparently not even close. So he re-issued the challenge – for the same race to be held in a year’s time. Ray won again.

So while Mike will may not go down in SCC history for beating Ray to the bridge, he will always be celebrated for his gift of the 365 day challenge, which is now held annually (obviously) and is open to all who wish to honour his persistence.

Anyone can throw down their own challenge to be fastest over the 11.5km return trip to the bridge on race day, provided they paddle a TK1 just like Ray and Mike did. In recent years new categories for women and Men 65yrs+ have been introduced.

The event has grown in reputation and numbers since 2008, with challengers travelling from Newport Waters, Sunshine Coast and Varsity Lakes Clubs. This is a very friendly and fun race – especially if, unlike Mike, you win the trophy. He is still trying for that aspect of SCC immortality.

The 365 day Challenge for 2016 will be upon us before the end of Summer. More details will be posted when available… keep training!
